The Factory vs. The Dining Table
I have spent the last two decades standing on both sides of the financial services fence.
My career began in the “factory.” As a Chartered Actuary, my world was defined by pure mathematics, complex pricing models, and institutional risk. It was an environment where every financial outcome could be perfectly calculated and neatly contained.
But a formula cannot account for human emotion.
When I transitioned to become a Chartered Financial Planner, I sat around the “dining table”. Across from real people navigating real life, I quickly realized that the perfect mathematical strategy is rarely the one we can actually stick to when things get stressful. A calculator cannot measure the anxiety of spending your hard-earned savings, nor can it quantify the value of peace of mind.
The Core Philosophy
That transition led to a foundational realization: The math is the easy part; the mind is the hard part.
I write for Thoughts About Money to help separate the emotional noise from the mathematical reality. My goal is to provide an uplifting, jargon-free space where we can openly discuss the psychological hurdles and invisible trade-offs that shape our financial lives.
Beyond the Page
Changing how we talk about money goes beyond the written word. I regularly collaborate with organizations, media outlets, and communities to bring behavioral clarity to wider audiences.
